Two Week Solo Trip in Japan Itinerary

Solo Trip to Japan Map

This spring, I took a solo trip to Japan for two weeks. I've traveled there before a handful of times while living in Korea, but it was usually only for a few days alone or with friends. This time, the world Japan was my oyster! I was pretty flexible with what I wanted to do but I did have a short, accomplishable list of what I wanted to see and I managed to cross most of the things off the list. ^ ^

Where to Go?

  • First, I knew that I wanted to see Mt. Fuji. I caught a glimpse of it on the train between Tokyo and Kyoto once but I wanted to get up close this time.

  • Next, while doing research, I found a few lists where people detailed locations that inspired Hayao Miyazaki in creating his films. I had already been to the Ghibli Museum in 2018 (AMAZING) and wanted to continue my journey with Ghibli. Plus, it gave me a good outline of places I could travel to considering I didn't know all that much about the country.

  • I've been a big fan of Anpanman (a Japanese children's cartoon) since catching an episode of the show on a flight once and I've been loving all things Anpanman related since. There are a few museums and theme parks scattered around the country so I put these on the list.

  • Seeing pictures of the Japanese Alps, specifically Kamikochi and the Old Town in Takayama online while researching made me definitely want to check this area out. It looked beautiful.

  • Lastly, Hiroshima is a city I hadn't been to yet and a bunch of different folks told me it had a cool vibe. Also, I was planning on meeting my boyfriend in Fukuyama after my travels, and it all just made sense.

I planned my itinerary as I went, only having a rough outline of the places I wanted to go, the travel costs and the time I needed/wanted to spend in each place. This is what I ended up doing for about two weeks of travel in Japan.

As you can see, the Japanese Alps ended up not happening. Unfortunately, getting there and getting into Kamikochi wasn’t possible during the winter/early spring season so I was sadly unable to go. But nonetheless, I had a great time seeing the places I was able to. ^ ^

Follow along as my trip continues. Let’s go!
